Napa Valley Wine
|
Red Varietals Within its relatively small compass, the Napa Valley is a surprisingly diverse environment which can do well with a handful of different red grape varieties. However, in recent decades the overwhelming success of popular Bordeaux varieties, namely Cabernet Sauvigon and Merlot, has set the bar quite high for other varietals to contend with. World class Merlot comes from cool spots such as Howell Mountain and the Stags Leap District, and in the lower spots of the valley, regions such as Rutherford and Oakville are synonymous with Napa Cabernet. For an introduction of the state of Napa reds proper, these varieties are the ones you should start with. For the slightly more adventurous, Sangiovese and Syrah from a good producer can present a more affordable alternative.

The best that have come out so far are bone dry, and rich with ripe, cherryish flavors that can be quite engaging. A rose Sangiovese from Pope Valley Winery is a great bargain, and a solid. With its fresh, crisp acidity it is perfect for outdoor picnics and barbeques.
