Napa Valley Merlot
|
After Pinot Noir, many claim Merlot as the most site specific, and therefore difficult to master, grape varieties there is. Somehow, in its short turn at cultivating the grape, the Napa Valley has managed to offer up a few classic versions that have bested the French versions in international tastings. The clear winner, right out of the starting gate, remains in the southeast quarter of the valley, in and above the Stag's Leap District. Watchers also have their eyes on nearby Carneros, and Calistoga, however odd it may seem, also merits further watching for wines of less delicate flavors and still greater austerity. Silverado Vineyards and the estate grown edition of Duckhorn Merlot are role models.
