California Chardonnay
|
Like many other prominent French varieties, Chardonnay finally made its way to California in the mid to late 19th century. A typically shy yielder, the grape struggled to gain a footing an early California wine industry that was focused more toward mass produced, generic jug wines.
It simply took up space that could be better used by faster growing, higher yielding cultivars. But the grape did offer one thing that was valuable to the early growers; it was able to to be made into acceptable wines across an enormous range of conditions. The first memorable California Chardonnay was produced in the 1940s by the Wente Brothers in Livermore Valley. The coastal terroir of the region was a place that the grape could finally feel at home, having come originally from the cool northern French region of Burgundy. Napa Valley followed suit in 1952, when Stony Hill released a wine that highlighted the grapes varietal characteristics. Hanzell then began to embellish the wine with oak, and this marked a shift in the public perception of the grape. Rather than as sort of catch-all white wine grape, it began to be seen as an elegant alternative to generic white wine. The state's winemakers began to catch on to the fact that California Chardonnay could be adroitly made and worthy of artistic consideration if it came from cool districts, was picked early enough to retain high natural acidity, and had pointed flavor profiles from concentrating the fruit in lower yields In 1976 Chateau Montelena became the first California winery to put its Chardonnay on the map when it beat out several prominent Burgundian houses in a blind tasting. In true American style, it was not long before just about every winery in California was producing a varietal Chardonnay. And since, it has become so ubiquitous that many consumers use the name almost synonymously with white wine. However, grown in appropriate vineyards and made with care, it can be glorious and is still the premier white varietal wine of the state. All in all, the grape variety has proven remarkably adaptable, growing well throughout the coastal counties, and even the Sierra Foothills. It is most widely planted in Napa, Monterey, Santa Barbara, and Sonoma counties, in almost equal measure, but by reputation, California Chardonnay reaches its apex in the Russian River Valley and in Carneros. The Anderson Valley, Santa Maria Valley, and much of Napa have also produced a great number of excellent, age worthy wines
Character and Styles of California ChardonnaysDuring the 1970s the majority of California Chardonnays were fermented in stainless steel, racked off their lees, and released without any addition of oak. As such, and given the warmer climate, California did much to introduce the notion of fruit driven Chardonnays to the world. Many winemakers also used small amounts of residual sugar to heighten whatever flavors they chose to push to the forefront. But this also worked to mellow the individual elements in the wine, much like bottle maturation would. It also greatly improved mouthfeel. Today as in Burgundy, California Chardonnay is often made as much or more in the cellar as in the vineyard. Some producers focus on the flavors of Chardonnay, fermenting cool in stainless steel and using oak only as a delicate seasoning. Others use every device wine makers know to add flavors: barrel fermentation, malolactic fermentation, aging on the lees in a high percentage of new oak. A wide range of styles from straightforwardly candy-carmel-appley to crisply fruity, with every stage in between can be found on the market. Most are dry, but a considerable number, including one of the biggest and best brands in the state, Kendall-Jackson, still offer a softening dollop of sweetness. The best Chardonnays from California are richly golden in color and medium bodied. They have an intense green apple nose and a refreshing structural balance that lets you enjoy tense fruit aromas without paying a painful price from thin, searingly acidic, aftertaste. Gainey Vineyards, in Santa Ynez, executes this style masterfully year after year. Wineries in the Sierra Foothills do so as well, with the addition of a unique exotic flavor and minerality that is characteristic of the region. Good, oaked California Chardonnays will also offer rich, intense fruit flavors of pear, melon, and peach, with toasty oak, vanilla, and buttery notes.
