Buying Giude: Beaujolais Nouveau

 

It is important to point out that Beaujolais and Beaujolais Nouveau are distinctly different. The first is a straightforward and fruity wine, the second is also fruity, but more cheerful, and above all emphasizing of its youth. Beaujolais Nouveau is a wine that is vinified and bottled as quickly as possible, usually only within a few weeks of harvesting. The idea behind this is to produce a refreshing, easy drinking wine wine with a maximum of youthful fruitiness. The carbonic maceration process of Beaujolais Nouveau does not differ from other Beaujolais wines; the period of fermentation is simply shortened, to emphasizes bright fruitiness at the expense of structure. This also keeps tannins to a minimum.


To the eye, Beaujolais Nouveau is light red—the shade of redcurrant, cherry and sometimes ruby—with violet reflections when young. In terms of its clarity and appearance, it is a very vibrant, light and attractive wine. On the nose, these wines are distinguished and delicate, with unmatchable fragrances of fresh grapes, small red fruits (raspberry, redcurrant, blackcurrant, etc.), but sometimes also floral scents. On the palate, Beaujolais Nouveau is above all a soft, supple, fruity, and quaffable with a good deal of freshness.
